This position statement examines the evolving landscape of generative AI, providing an overview of the generative AI lifecycle, examples of its use and misuse, and consideration of online safety risks and opportunities.The paper includes steps industry can take to prevent online safety risks of generative AI and improve user safety and empowerment. It also sets out eSafety's current tools and approaches to generative AI, which includes education for young people, parents and educators; reporting schemes for serious online abuse; transparency tools; and the status of mandatory codes and standards. The position paper was released in August 2023 was developed following significant consultation with experts in generative AI including academics and NGOs.The initiative has the following objective(s):Outline Office of the eSafety Commissioner's (eSafety's) approach to generative AI.
