This initiative provides updated guidance to help Australian Government agencies safely use publicly available generative AI tools, such as chatbots that can draft text, summarise documents, or answer questions. The guidance explains how staff can use these tools with government information that is not classified or sensitive while protecting personal and commercial information. The guidance was updated to reflect new information security advice from the Department of Home Affairs.

Aims to clarify how Australia’s privacy laws apply to AI and outlines practical steps to follow privacy best practices. The Framework guides the Australian Public Service (APS) in improving governance practices for data related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and aims to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people greater agency over how their data are governed within the APS. Recognising the importance of data for self-determination, the Framework provides a stepping stone towards greater awareness and acceptance by APS agencies of the principles of Indigenous Data Sovereignty.

Finance developed the Document Register Agent (DRA) an AI-enabled tool that supports a business area to extract and record key information from documents. It uses AI and automation to extract key information from documents and store it in a consistent format. DRA was developed to improve access to historical records, reduce duplication of work, and address problems caused by broken links, inconsistent document formats and limited searchability.

In 2024, the DTA led the 6-month Australian Government trial of Microsoft 365 Copilot – a generative AI assistant embedded in the Microsoft 365 application suite. The trial involved the distribution of over 5,700 Copilot licenses across 56 federal government agencies. Broadly, the trial and evaluation tested whether the anticipated benefits of generative AI capabilities translated into real‑world adoption by workers.

The standard helps agencies, technical specialists and business owners build AI safely and responsibly by providing practical guidance to design, build and deploy AI systems in ways that uphold fairness, transparency and accountability. The standard reinforces the Australian Government’s AI Ethics Principles into a set of technical requirements and guidelines.

This initiative applies AI to automatically create short, clear summaries of government grant applications published on Grant Connect. It was developed to reduce manual work and errors, and to ensure grant information is accurate, consistent and easy for the public to understand.

It was developed to manage a large volume of submissions while ensuring every response was still read and checked by people. The approach aimed to save time, improve consistency, and support better advice to government while protecting privacy.

The Department uses drones to provide innovative and expert advice grounded in evidence and science, provide regulatory compliance and surveillance activities, provide land management, visitor safety and infrastructure inspection in Commonwealth Parks, engage and partner with First Nations ranger groups and provide staff safety and wellbeing in operational settings.

farmpredict is a simulation model of Australian farm businesses. It uses statistical machine learning to predict how Australian farms will be affected by recent and future weather and other factors like changes in commodity prices. Outputs from farmpredict support government and other organisations in planning early for supporting farms through drought and other challenges. farmpredict can also separate effects of climate from other changes, helping understand the costs of climate change.

The Digital Health Agency’s AI initiative aims to improve how health information is used to support safer, more connected care for Australians. It helps clinicians and consumers by providing faster insights and reducing manual work. The initiative was created to address growing demand for timely, reliable health information and to ensure emerging AI tools are used safely and responsibly in the health system.

GovAI Chat is a secure, government-controlled generative AI tool developed specifically for the Australian Public Service (APS). The goal of GovAI Chat is to give public servants access to the advanced AI capabilities of a contemporary chat interface tailored to the APS context – with the security, compliance, and public sector knowledge embedded in the GovAI environment.

The AI Plan for the Australian Public Service (APS) will improve government service delivery, policy outcomes, efficiency, and productivity, through substantially increasing the use of AI in government. Every public servant will have the training and guidance required to use generative AI safely and responsibly, alongside secure access to generative AI tools, and every agency will have a Chief AI Officer to drive adoption, with AI use tracked and reported on.

Guidance for AI Adoption: Implementation Guidance (October 2025) is an Australian Government initiative providing a framework for responsible AI adoption. It outlines six practices covering accountability, impact assessment, risk management, transparency, testing and human oversight, helping organisations plan, implement and govern AI systems while mitigating risks and aligning with international standards.

The Government Response to the Privacy Act Review Report (13 April 2023) outlines proposed reforms to Australia’s privacy framework following a review released on 16 February 2023. It aims to modernise privacy law by updating definitions, strengthening individual rights, enhancing regulation (including automated decision-making and data breaches), and improving enforcement, with implementation requiring further consultation, guidance and legislative changes.

Published on 20 March 2025, the AI and Cyber Risk Model Clauses initiative by BuyICT.gov.au makes available a collection of contractual clauses for inclusion in digital and ICT procurement contracts in Australia. The AI model clauses support responsible, ethical, and secure procurement of AI systems, including custom solutions, embedded AI products, and internal AI tools, promoting transparency and accountability.

Proposed in July 2025, this bill amends the Criminal Code Act 1995 to criminalize the use of technology, including AI, for the creation of child abuse material. It introduces new offences for downloading, accessing, supplying, or enabling access to such technology.

Proposed in June 2024, and adopted later that year in August, this bill introduces new offences into the Criminal Code Act 1995 targeting the non-consensual transmission of sexual material, including deepfake content. It criminalises the use of carriage services to share sexual material depicting individuals aged 18 or older without their consent, regardless of whether the material is real, altered, or generated using digital technologies such as AI.

Enacted in September 2024 and updated in December 2025, this policy outlines a framework for the safe, ethical, and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) across government entities. The policy introduces principles under the "enable, engage, and evolve" framework, mandates transparency and accountability measures, and provides guidance on risk assessment and integration with existing governance structures.

The Identity-Matching Services Bill 2019 (IMS Bill) authorises the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) to create and maintain facilities for the sharing of facial images and other identity information between government agencies, and in some cases, private organisations.
