While artificial intelligence is being increasingly used by many private sector companies, researchers and students, as well as more broadly citizens, governments around the world are also experimenting with and adopting AI to design smarter public policies, modernise the machinery of government, deliver public services more efficiently, and be more responsive and accountable to citizens. Yet despite this growing momentum, only a handful of these innovations have scaled up to truly transform how public institutions work.

The OECD’s recent global report on Governing with Artificial Intelligence examined in depth 200 use cases across 11 government functions worldwide. This included reflections on the use of AI at both national and subnational levels, drawing on insights from the OECD Programme on Smart Cities and Inclusive Growth, as well as ongoing work on AI for regional development.

The pace of change is accelerating, and more needs to be done to build an up-to-date, comprehensive evidence base of AI efforts in government, along with the policies and tools that support them, to inspire action and share learning.

To address this gap, the OECD is launching its Global Call for Governing with AI – an open invitation to governments worldwide to share real-world use cases, policy initiatives, and practical tools related to the trustworthy development and deployment of AI across government.

This global data collection effort will inform governments’ AI strategies, policies and initiatives and contribute to building a dedicated public repository on AI in government on the OECD.AI Policy Observatory, a global reference on AI. The repository will provide a trusted, up-to-date knowledge hub to support peer learning, policy development, and trustworthy AI adoption in government. These efforts are part of the OECD Horizontal Project, Thriving with AI: Empowering Economies and Societies, which aims to support governments at all levels and other AI actors in navigating the complexities of AI adoption.

We are particularly interested in examples at all levels of government that relate to:

  • Concrete use cases of AI in core government functions at the national, regional, or local level, including those with measurable impact and potential for scale and replication. Such use cases may include AI to improve internal services, public services, policymaking or accountability in a variety of policy domains.
  • Policy and governance initiatives that facilitate AI adoption in the public sector and protect against risks. These could be investments in digital public infrastructure or digital skills, agile procurement processes, the development of oversight mechanisms, partnerships with external actors, and stakeholder engagement with civil society, businesses, and the public.
  • Implementation tools to support effective and trustworthy use of AI in government (e.g. technical tools to assess and mitigate risks or remove bias, tools for secure data collection and processing or for developing open registries of public algorithms).

Top use cases and policy and governance initiatives will be featured in the OECD.AI Policy Navigator. Top tools will be featured in the OECD.AI Catalogue of Tools for Trustworthy AI. Cases may also be profiled in OECD reports and other products.

Whether you are a national public servant working on AI policy or technology adoption or a local government official leading an AI pilot project, your input is essential. Submissions are also accepted from non-governmental actors (i.e., international organisations, civil society organisations, academia, and the private sector) as long as the public sector is integrally involved in the work or public servants are a key user (e.g., a tool developed by an academic partner to assist governments).

Submit your contributions

We invite you to contribute to the Global Call via this online submission form by 27 February 2026. Submissions will be reviewed by the OECD team, and selected examples will be featured in the AI in Government global repository and future OECD reports.

To help you prepare your submission, you can preview the submission questions – which vary somewhat depending on the type of initiative you are submitting – and share them with your team using the links below:

Help us build a clearer picture of how AI is shaping the future of government – and ensure your efforts are part of the global conversation.
