Initiative overview
The BikeSafeAI initiative is a multidisciplinary research project started in February 2024, running through August 2026. Its main aim is to provide insights into cycling behaviour and traffic risk, by using advanced AI technologies to detect situations that could lead to accidents. These insights are intended to inform policymakers, educators, and urban planners.
Key objectives of BikeSafeAI include:
- Analysing traffic situations involving cyclists to identify patterns of risk (e.g. near-misses, conflict points) using sensor data, cameras, or other source data.
- Supplying actionable information for decision-makers (cities, municipalities, mobility authorities) to design safer infrastructure and interventions.
- Enhancing public awareness about cyclist safety through data-driven visualisations or reports.
Implementation involves multiple partners, including:
- Universities (Hanze University of Applied Sciences, NHL Stenden, University of Groningen)
- Regional government authorities (Provinces of Fryslân and Utrecht; City of Leeuwarden)
- Safety and mobility research and NGOs (SWOV, Fietsersbond, etc.)
