Initiative overview

UMCG (University Medical Center Groningen) has launched an innovative initiative using artificial intelligence to help healthcare providers respond to patients' written questions more efficiently. Integrated into the hospital’s electronic patient record (EPR) system, the AI reads patient queries and drafts suggested responses, which are then reviewed and personalized by medical staff. This approach aims to reduce administrative workload, freeing up more time for direct patient care. UMCG is the first hospital in Europe to implement this AI chatbot in actual patient communication, ensuring responses remain safe, empathetic, and informative without compromising data privacy.
