The national data strategy for Austria follows the vision to use data for the common good. The strategy was published in 2024 with three goals that aim to develop sustainable data infrastructures, enable responsible data usage and create a data culture as well as strengthen data literacy. The three goals are detailed across 45 measures that address various stakeholders in the public sector and the data economy.
Initiative overview
Data has become a central factor in today's society and the further development of the economy. The intelligent use of data makes it possible to collect comprehensive information, generate knowledge and insights for evidence-based decision-making for policy, the economy and research. The national data strategy for Austria addresses the issues that data is too often not used and that cross-domain usability is often not possible. For that reason, the strategy provides a general strategic framework, with which the Federal Government intend to promote the exchange and broad use of data while maintaining data protection and security standards. The strategy defines three goals: develop sustainable data infrastructures and technical solutions for efficient data exchange, enable responsible data sharing and establish an innovative data culture as well as strengthen data literacy competences. 45 accompanying measures across the domains aim to strengthen the change towards proactive data use and data culture. For implementing the measures, the strategy foresees to establish a stakeholder forum, to exchange on best practices and actively engage with actors of the data economy. Additionally, the strategy foresees a cross-ministerial exchange platform to foster the sharing of knowledge between federal ministries and track the implementation of measures.
