Initiative overview

Flemish participation in the EuroHPC LUMI pre-exascale supercomputing consortium (2020–2026) gives researchers access to high-performance computing resources at the forefront of European infrastructure. By joining this large-scale international initiative, Flemish institutions can conduct cutting-edge AI, data science, and simulation-based research that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve locally.

Key objectives and benefits include:

  • Access to Tier 0 supercomputing infrastructure, supporting complex computations and large-scale simulations
  • Knowledge sharing and collaboration with international experts in high-performance computing (HPC)
  • Cost-efficient utilisation of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers
  • Ensuring high performance and affordability for Flemish researchers and institutions

The strategic location and scale of the LUMI infrastructure are designed to maximise performance while keeping access efficient and sustainable. This participation also strengthens Belgium’s position in European HPC research and supports innovation in AI, scientific computing, and related fields.
