The Jean Zay supercomputer extension is a French government initiative investing €40 million, via the France 2030 programme, to expand the computing capacity of the Jean Zay supercomputer, operated by CNRS at IDRIS in Orsay. The extension focuses on upgrading GPU architecture to meet growing AI research demands and is expected to make Jean Zay the largest AI-dedicated supercomputer in France.

Initiative overview

Demand for computing resources on Jean Zay has grown exponentially: during the last allocation campaign, only one hour of computing time was available for every four requested. The €40 million investment is described as equivalent to doubling the total investment already made in the machine since its inauguration in 2019.

Industrial partners are already using Jean Zay and must commit to open science principles, such as publishing results or sharing algorithms and datasets, to be eligible. The academic community retains half of computing time, while the other half is opened to innovation, including startups from CNRS laboratories. The transition to GPU architecture requires researchers to adapt existing codes, many optimised for CPUs over decades, and while IDRIS provides technical support through engineers, additional support will likely be needed to accompany researchers through this transition.
