Initiative overview
Austria is developing a national platform to make better use of health data that has already been collected. This is known as "secondary use" of data — using information not to treat individual patients, but to help improve public health policies and healthcare planning. At present, much of this data is stored separately by hospitals, insurance providers, and health authorities, making it difficult to get a complete picture of the healthcare system. This new platform aims to solve that problem by bringing data together in a secure and coordinated way.
Recent legal changes require several public bodies to work together on this project. These include the national government, the provinces (Länder), regional health insurance funds, and the main social insurance organisation. Together, they are responsible for setting up and running the platform. The main goal is to allow public health authorities to analyse anonymised health data so they can make better decisions — for example, to track how diseases spread, improve the quality of care, or identify where the health system needs more support.
Although still under development, the platform will be built with strong protections for privacy and data security.
