The CroRIS Project: A National CRIS in Croatia
The Ministry of Science and Education in Croatia has developed a comprehensive database mapping the research competencies and innovation capacities of scientific institutions and private sector entities in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and space technologies. This initiative is part of the strategic project Science and Technology Foresight, co-financed by the European Union.
AI Centre Lipik
The AI Centre Lipik offers a six-month training programme in artificial intelligence and programming, combining theoretical and practical instruction. It supports emerging AI startups through an incubator that provides mentoring, business development, and infrastructure. It aims to strengthen skills, innovation, and AI-based entrepreneurship in the Lipik region and beyond.
AI & gaming (JURK) EDIH
Operates as a comprehensive digitisation and digital transformation centre serving small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public sector entities in central Croatia and the northern Adriatic region. The hub functions as a one-stop shop for digital technology integration, with particular expertise in AI, gamification, and blockchain technologies.
EDIH Adria
A member of the European Digital Innovation Hubs Network, focusing on addressing Croatia's specific technological needs in AI and HPC. The hub specifically targets key sectors including health, tourism, transport (with maritime sector emphasis), energy, and sustainable development. The hub’s aims is to accelerate the digital economic transition in Croatia through sector-specific technological solutions and support.
European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) Crobohub++
A specialised digital innovation centre that serves as part of the European Digital Innovation Hubs network. The hub focuses on three strategic areas: AI applications for business processes, cybersecurity solutions and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. The centre provides crucial data storage and HPC computing capacity necessary for AI development, making advanced technological capabilities accessible to businesses and organisations.
Centre for AI and Cybersecurity
An interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Rijeka that brings together scientists from various faculties to create innovative AI-based solutions. The centre serves as a collaborative hub for continuous idea exchange and development, emphasising both AI advancement and robust cybersecurity measures. The centre’s work focuses on creating practical applications while ensuring high-level security standards through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CAI)
A leading research institution with three primary objectives: advancing theoretical AI foundations across multiple domains, facilitating industry collaboration through AI technology transfer to develop innovative products and services; and providing comprehensive AI education at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, along with specialised industry training programmes.
Smart Specialisation Strategy 2023-2029
A research and innovation strategy that provides a framework to foster innovation through developing research and innovation infrastructure and collaboration between business and research institutions. It supports applied research and development activities in smart and green solutions, providing grant funding for AI-related research projects and focusing investments in areas where Croatia has competitive advantages and research strengths.
Research Infrastructure Development Roadmap of the Republic of Croatia 2023-2027
A national roadmap that prioritises investments in research infrastructures focused on AI development and application. The roadmap recognises AI as a key solution to addressing social challenges, acknowledging its impact on the labour market and its role in transforming business and social processes. The strategy emphasises international cooperation through knowledge exchange and expert collaboration in AI development.
Regional Centre of Excellence for Robotics (CRTA)
A specialised centre focused on establishing a regional hub of excellence for robotics and AI research, development, and education. The centre concentrates on developing advanced robot applications, particularly in industrial and medical sectors, working to replace traditional automation and human work with adaptive and intelligent systems. Their work extends to various human activity areas requiring intelligent automation solutions.
Innovation Centre Nikola Tesla
A technology centre dedicated to supporting Croatian economic growth through high-technology development and implementation. The centre specialises in multiple sectors including energetics, transport, automation and robotics, advanced components, biomedical engineering, and information and communication technology. Their work aims to bridge the gap between research and practical industrial applications in these high-tech domains.
Development of AI solutions for patient triage
This initiative focuses on developing AI tools to help hospitals in Croatia better triage patients. It benefits medical staff and patients by improving decision-making and speeding up care. The goal is to make healthcare more efficient and responsive using advanced technology.
C2.3. R3-I4 Consolidation of THE CEZIH health information infrastructure system (Central Health information system of the Republic of Croatia)
This initiative focuses on improving Croatia’s Central Health Information System (CEZIH) by implementing a TIER 3 data centre to guarantee continuous, dependable, and secure operations. The project aims to migrate the system to a state cloud environment, establish disaster recovery solutions, and enhance overall data management.
AI4Health.Cro
A non-profit public-private consortium of experts in the field of AI, healthcare and startups that sees AI as the key to advancing healthcare and medicine. The consortium brings together 15 partners coordinated by the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) and is funded equally under the Digital Europe Programme and the Next Generation EU with a funding period of three years.
ATMOSYS Air Quality Management System
The ATMOSYS Air Quality Management System provides software tools and web applications to monitor and manage air quality in Croatia. It uses machine learning to forecast air quality at national measurement sites. The system was adapted from a Belgian model to meet Croatian regional and urban requirements.
EuroCC Cyprus
The Cyprus NCC hosts activities, strengthens competences and provides services to the Cyprus and regional computational communities in the fields of High Performance Computing (HPC), Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) and their application in industry, academia and public sector.
Bura Supercomputer
Operated by the Centre for Advanced Computing and Modelling (CNRM) at the University of Rijeka, the Bura Supercomputer supports advanced research. Bura enables researchers to solve complex problems and perform advanced simulations across various scientific disciplines. Bura's peak performance is 233.6 teraflops.
