Initiative overview

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched a funding measure that seeks to improve the precision of surgical treatment in oncology using interactive AI technologies. The call frames AI as a contributor to personalised, precision oncology before, during, and after surgery, reflecting surgery’s central role in multimodal cancer care.

The programme is designed to support R&D that advances AI-assisted planning, intra-operative support, and post-operative decision-making, with attention to clinical relevance, data quality, and patient safety. It encourages collaboration across medicine, research and industry so that validated solutions can progress toward use in practice.
