Initiative overview
Launched on 4 December 2024 by BDC (Canada's bank for entrepreneurs, a federal Crown corporation), the Data to AI Program was developed in response to BDC research showing that only 39% of Canadian SME owners believed they were using AI, while 66% recognised AI tools when shown a list. The programme offers a structured four-stage approach: (1) Digital/AI diagnostic and readiness assessment; (2) Personalised advisory services to define business objectives and AI adoption roadmap; (3) Financing to cover the total cost of AI, automation, and cybersecurity integration — delivered as a term loan with a repayment period of up to eight years, covering consulting fees, software acquisition, and implementation costs; and (4) Connection to BDC's partner ecosystem for specialised services. The programme covers three technology pillars: AI solutions (understanding AI, adoption planning, and implementation); cybersecurity (assessment and safeguarding of digital assets); and digital automation (workflow process improvement). BDC committed CAD 500M in new financing capacity to support the programme alongside advisory services. The programme targets SMEs of all sizes across all sectors, particularly those in the early stages of digital and AI adoption. It builds on BDC's prior Digital Adoption Program and digital advisory capabilities.
