Initiative overview
Semiconductor technology plays a critical role in almost every modern device, from smartphones to advanced medical equipment. As global demand for semiconductors grows—and international competition increases—Finland faces both a challenge and an opportunity: to strengthen its position in this vital sector. To respond, the Technology Industries of Finland launched an initiative to develop the country’s semiconductor capabilities. This effort is supported by various public sector measures, such as research funding, infrastructure development, education and training programs, and strategies to attract international investment.
The main goal of the initiative is to ensure Finland can remain competitive in the global semiconductor industry. This means building a strong foundation in research, innovation, and manufacturing capacity, while also making sure there is a skilled workforce to support long-term growth. By combining industry leadership with public support, the strategy aims to create the right conditions for companies to develop and apply advanced semiconductor technologies in Finland.
The initiative works by bringing together different areas of public and private cooperation. Public investment supports research and development (R&D), including infrastructure for testing and production. Education and talent development efforts are designed to train both current and future professionals in semiconductor-related fields. Additionally, the strategy includes targeted actions to attract international companies and investors, positioning Finland as a reliable and innovative partner in the semiconductor value chain.
