Initiative overview
Finland’s open forest data system, launched in 2018, made detailed information on forest resources freely accessible. This has created opportunities to modernize forest management through digital tools and AI. The aim is to support sustainable harvesting, improve efficiency, and provide new services for both forest owners and the wider bioeconomy.
Recent projects focus on advanced data collection methods. High-resolution forest maps and autonomous drones are being tested to monitor stands and guide harvesting operations with greater precision. Researchers are also exploring the use of digital twins of forests, which can simulate growth and management options, as well as gamified mobile apps that encourage users to contribute field data.
