Initiative overview

Sweden is actively strengthening its digital and AI ecosystem through European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs). These hubs serve as one-stop shops helping companies—particularly SMEs and public organisations—access expertise, test technologies, and scale digital solutions, including artificial intelligence.

Key aspects of the Swedish approach include:

  • Co-financing four EDIHs approved by the European Commission, ensuring they have the necessary resources to offer cutting-edge services.
  • Maintaining five additional hubs with the EC “Seal of Excellence”, showing Sweden’s commitment to a larger innovation network beyond the formally funded hubs.
  • Joint coordination by Vinnova and Tillväxtverket, combining national innovation policy with regional growth support to make hubs accessible throughout the country.

These hubs provide:

  • Testing and experimentation environments for digital and AI solutions.
  • Access to advanced technologies and training to boost digital maturity.
  • Support for financing and networking to accelerate innovation in SMEs.

Through this co-financing and organisational support, Sweden is building a comprehensive innovation hub infrastructure, enabling companies and public institutions to adopt AI and digital technologies faster and more effectively while fostering regional economic development.
