Initiative overview
Sweden participates in the LUMI supercomputing infrastructure, hosted by CSC in Finland, to provide researchers with access to one of Europe’s most powerful high-performance computing (HPC) systems. LUMI, the fastest supercomputer in Europe, is part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, which aims to strengthen European HPC capabilities and advance research and innovation across the continent.
The initiative addresses the growing demand for computational resources for data-intensive scientific research, including artificial intelligence, climate modeling, genomics, and materials science. By leveraging LUMI, Swedish researchers gain access to cutting-edge computational power, enabling complex simulations, AI model training, and advanced analytics that would not be feasible on national infrastructure alone.
Sweden’s participation is coordinated through the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing Sweden (NAISS), which facilitates access for universities, research institutes, and other partners. Researchers can submit proposals to use LUMI for collaborative projects, ensuring that the system supports a wide range of scientific and technological applications.
