Initiative overview

The GovTech AI Sandbox pilot represents Greece’s commitment to modernising public service delivery through responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence. The initiative was launched to address long-standing barriers that hinder innovation within the public sector — particularly the difficulty of safely testing, deploying, and scaling AI-driven solutions designed to improve citizen services.

Greek public authorities often face challenges in navigating regulatory uncertainty, limited technical expertise, and fragmented infrastructure, all of which can slow the adoption of AI technologies. The GovTech AI Sandbox seeks to overcome these constraints by providing a controlled environment where public sector organisations can experiment with AI applications in a secure, transparent, and compliant way.

The sandbox enables collaboration between government bodies, academia, and technology providers, helping to test real-world AI use cases — such as process automation, data analysis for policy design, and enhanced citizen engagement tools. It also fosters an exchange of best practices and supports the development of common standards for ethical and user-centric AI in the public sector.
