Initiative overview

The IPCEI-CIS is a strategic EU initiative designed to establish a European value chain for Cloud Infrastructure and Services (CIS). Approved by the European Commission in December 2023, the project involves seven EU member states and 19 companies, with Italy receiving approximately €409 million in state aid, part of a total of €1.2 billion allocated across Europe.

Key objectives of the initiative include:

  • Developing a federated cloud-to-edge continuum: Creating an interoperable, multi-provider infrastructure to support real-time, low-latency data processing across various sectors.
  • Enhancing sector-specific applications: Focusing on areas such as smart manufacturing, energy efficiency, maritime operations, and healthcare.
  • Promoting open-source and open-access platforms: Ensuring that the developed technologies are accessible and adaptable for various users and industries.

Italian contributions to the project encompass:

  • TIM: Leading the development of the TIM Edge & Cloud Continuum, aiming to provide high-performance, low-latency cloud services with guaranteed bandwidth and compliance with EU data regulations.
  • Fincantieri: Focusing on creating an efficient suite of processing services to organize and orchestrate information flows in an Edge-Cloud/Multicloud Continuum, with applications in smart shipyards and smart ships.
  • Engineering Ingegneria Informatica: Contributing to the development of advanced processing tools and services within the cloud infrastructure.
  • Tiscali: Participating in the development of cloud capabilities and services.
  • Reply: Engaging in the integration and interoperability aspects of the cloud infrastructure.
