Initiative overview
Romania is joining the European effort to share genome and clinical data through its involvement in the European Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI), part of the wider 1+ Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative. This effort addresses the challenge that many countries have useful genetic and health data, but lack the systems and connections needed to use them safely across borders. By building its own infrastructure, Romania aims to make its data usable for research, medical advances, and improved patient care, while respecting privacy and legal rules.
The main goals are to enable secure access to high-quality human genome data and matching clinical information; to align Romania’s systems with agreed European standards so data can talk to each other; and to support national research and health services in using genome information for better diagnosis, treatments, and prevention. It also seeks to strengthen Romania’s role in European genomics, helping Romanian institutions participate fully in transnational research and healthcare innovations.
Romania has institutions like the Genomics Research and Development Institute and the Authority for Digitization of Romania participating in GDI. There is coordination with the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the National Genomic Research Network. The plan is to establish a “National Mirror Group” or equivalent body, build or upgrade national genome data hubs, and ensure these meet legal, technical, and ethical standards required by the European framework (like data protection, data quality, interoperability). Romania contributes its existing genome datasets and clinical data under these conditions.
