Proposals for an Italian strategy for AI have been developed by the Expert Group on artificial intelligence selected by the Ministry of Economic Development and published in July 2020.

The group that drafted the AI Proposal was composed of 30 artificial intelligence experts selected by the Ministry of Economic Development. The Group met six times between January and May 2019, and was structured in subgroups dedicated to ethics and regulations, research and technological development, data economy, training and skills building and public administration. During the group's activities, the General Directorate for Industrial Policy, Competitiveness and SMEs of the Ministry for Economic Development provided constant support both from a logistics and contents point of view. Italy released a (strategic) report on AI in March 2018.
