Initiative overview
Chest radiography (CXR) is an important tool for screening and triage of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). It helps to identify people who may have TB and guides further testing, improving case detection and cost-efficiency. Computer-aided detection (CAD) products powered by artificial intelligence (AI) can automatically analyse CXR images for signs of TB. They provide an abnormality score that indicates the likelihood of TB and signals the need for further diagnostic evaluation. This makes screening faster, more consistent, and less dependent on the availability of trained specialists.
Impact:
- According to the World Health Organization (WHO) consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis, CAD software can replace human readers in interpreting digital chest X-rays for TB screening and triage among people aged 15 years and older in populations where screening is recommended. This recommendation highlights CAD as a reliable and scalable solution that supports early TB detection and better use of health resources.
- By improving accuracy and accessibility, AI-powered CAD systems strengthen national TB control programmes and help protect at-risk communities."
