Initiative overview

The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Slovenia is preparing to launch a Competence Center for Artificial Intelligence, designed as a cornerstone of the country’s National Programme for Artificial Intelligence (NpAI). Its purpose is to strengthen Slovenia’s position in AI development, adoption, and integration across both public and private sectors.

The Competence Center will pursue several objectives:

  • Advance AI research and expertise by supporting collaboration between academia, industry, and government.
  • Foster innovation and encourage the development of AI-based products and services.
  • Support SMEs through training, consulting, and test-before-invest opportunities, acting as a one-stop-shop for AI adoption.
  • Promote economic growth by facilitating the integration of AI into industry, public services, and administration.

The Center will be implemented through a consortium model, ensuring broad participation from key stakeholders. A public call was launched in December 2024 to select consortium members, expected to include universities, research institutions, private sector companies, and government actors.

  • Looking forward, the Competence Center is set to become a national focal point for AI, aligning Slovenia’s research and innovation activities with broader European initiatives. By providing infrastructure, expertise, and support services, it is expected to:
  • Enhance Slovenia’s competitiveness in the global digital economy,
  • Stimulate the development of AI talent and skills,
  • Drive cross-sectoral applications of AI in areas such as healthcare, manufacturing, smart cities, and public administration.
