Initiative overview

The Fraunhofer Society, with 76 institutes across Germany, plays a crucial role in transferring AI research into business applications. Three Fraunhofer Institutes are particularly relevant for the transfer of AI research: 
i) Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS); 
ii) Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) (Fraunhofer IPA, 2024[318]); and 
iii) Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO).
Through their AI Innovation Centre, IPA and IAO offer companies support in exploring, assessing, and implementing AI solutions, including proof-of-concept projects. To date, over 250 companies, including many SMEs, have participated in these programmes, with 30% of them implementing operational AI systems.
