Initiative overview
The National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI) is a strategic initiative aimed at positioning Italy as a leader in the field of quantum science and technology. Officially launched in January 2023, the institute operates under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), funded by the European Union's NextGenerationEU programme. The project is scheduled to run until November 2025, with a total funding allocation of €115.9 million.
Key Objectives:
- Research and Development: NQSTI focuses on advancing research in quantum technologies, including quantum computing, sensing, and secure communication, particularly at the experimental "proof of concept" level.
- Technology Transfer: The institute aims to bridge the gap between research and industry by facilitating the translation of quantum research into practical applications, fostering innovation and economic growth.
- Education and Outreach: NQSTI is committed to enhancing public understanding of quantum technologies through educational programs and outreach activities, aiming to build a well-informed society and workforce.
- Support for Start-ups: The institute supports the creation and incubation of spin-offs and start-ups, with a special focus on southern Italy, to move research outcomes up in the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale.
NQSTI brings together a diverse group of over 20 Italian entities, including:
- Research Centres: Such as the National Research Council (CNR) and the Institute for Complex Systems (ISC).
- Universities: Including the University of Pisa and the University of Milan-Bicocca.
- Enterprises: Collaborating to translate research into commercial applications.
