Initiative overview

This joint project is part of Germany’s New Vehicle and System Technologies programme and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). Its main goal is to develop and train generative AI models that can accelerate the safe and large-scale deployment of automated and autonomous vehicles.

The project tackles several key challenges:

  • Overcoming technical and operational barriers to autonomous driving
  • Creating foundation models for self-driving systems using generative AI
  • Pooling proprietary datasets from multiple companies for the first time to train large, high-quality AI models collaboratively

The initiative is also designed to strengthen Germany’s position in AI-powered mobility innovation, by promoting cross-industry collaboration and reducing duplication of effort in data collection and model training.

Future outlook:

  • Development of robust, scalable generative AI models for autonomous driving
  • Broader data-sharing frameworks between companies to accelerate innovation
  • Faster, safer deployment of automated and autonomous vehicles on public roads
