Initiative overview

The NQSTI is a three-year programme with a total funding of €115.9 million under the NRRP, specifically aligned with the European Union’s NextGenerationEU framework. The initiative encompasses three main action lines:

  • Enhancing Research Infrastructure
Developing state-of-the-art facilities and platforms for quantum research, including integration with high-performance computing infrastructures and the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI).
  • Fostering Collaboration Between Academia and Industry
Establishing a network of national quantum institutes to optimize resources, bridge research with industry, and stimulate industrial innovation through joint laboratories and prototyping.
  • Developing Innovative Research Models
Implementing new standards, training programs, and fostering the creation of spin-offs and start-ups, particularly focusing on the southern regions of Italy to promote balanced regional development.

The NQSTI is a consortium that includes over 20 institutions, comprising research centres, universities, and enterprises across Italy. It aims to translate quantum research into industrial applications, addressing the entire innovation chain—from fundamental research to market deployment.

A significant aspect of the programme is its emphasis on education and outreach, aiming to make quantum science and technology pervasive in society. This includes initiatives in secondary and higher education, public engagement, and the development of a skilled workforce to support the growing quantum industry.
