Initiative overview

Lithuania’s State Forest Service and the Environmental Protection Agency have run successive projects (2021–2022) that apply AI to detect clear-cut areas from logging. Using satellite and other remote-sensing imagery, models flag recent canopy loss so authorities can verify felling, monitor compliance, and update forest inventories faster.

These projects improve timeliness and consistency compared with manual mapping alone, and create a repeatable workflow the agencies can rerun after each logging season. The outputs feed into national monitoring and enforcement, with the aim to support more transparent, data-driven forest governance.
