France’s AI Demonstrators initiatives (DIAC and DIAT) support the development and testing of trusted and applied AI technologies. They fund projects that demonstrate AI in real-world settings across healthcare, mobility, industry, energy, and critical infrastructure. The programmes aim to strengthen the position of French AI companies and accelerate the adoption of AI in society and the economy.

Initiative overview

In March 2023, the French government announced the extension of two existing AI demonstration schemes and the launch of a new one focused on trusted AI, as part of the France 2030 national strategy. These initiatives aim to support the technological maturation and demonstration of AI in practical, real-world contexts.

Key initiatives include:

  • Trusted Artificial Intelligence Demonstrators (DIAC):
    • Supports development of hardware, software, and system innovations to ensure AI is safe, secure, robust, explainable, and ethical
    • Projects focus on demonstrating a functional need, strengthening market position or opening new markets
    • Covers sectors such as medical devices, mobility, Industry 4.0, energy, and critical infrastructure
  • Artificial Intelligence Demonstrators in the Territories (DIAT):
    • Launched April 2023 as a second wave of funding
    • Supports territory-specific AI and data science demonstrators
    • Projects must use energy- or data-efficient AI and demonstrate results in real-world environments
  • Technological Maturation and Demonstration of Embedded AI:
    • Supports AI functionalities implemented close to sensors in embedded systems
    • Applications include IIoT, consumer IoT, medical devices, energy networks, urban infrastructure, telecommunications, and agriculture
    • Also funds advanced hardware architectures, especially for AI-dedicated semiconductors
