Initiative overview

The centres have been established from 2018 onwards. To support their expansion and their development into a national research network on AI, the The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has first doubled the funding of the competence centers in 2019. Since July 2022, the centres are funded on a permanent basis by BMBF and the host states. The centres will be supported to become part of a greater European network on AI research. The centres focus on gaining new results in basic research, methods and technologies. They also tackle major challenges in particular sectors, industries and society and contribute to transferring research results into new applications and teaching.
