Initiative overview

The primary objectives of this initiative are to establish a robust and internationally competitive research infrastructure that facilitates long-term data storage, supports the development of AI and HPC capabilities, and ensures compliance with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. By providing a central hub for open science and supercomputing, the data centre will enable Slovenian researchers to manage and share data more effectively, collaborate across borders, and contribute to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). \\

The Maribor data centre is designed with sustainability in mind, leveraging its proximity to the Dravske elektrarne Maribor hydroelectric plant to utilize renewable energy sources. Additionally, plans include the installation of solar panels and the use of surplus heat for district heating, further reducing its environmental footprint. The facility will also feature advanced infrastructure to support the Slovenian AI Factory, a €150 million EU-sponsored project aimed at fostering AI research and innovation.
