Initiative overview
Sweden is actively participating in the EUCAIM (European Federation for Cancer Images) project, a pivotal initiative under the European Cancer Imaging Initiative, which is a cornerstone of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. This project aims to establish a pan-European digital infrastructure that facilitates the secure sharing and analysis of cancer-related imaging data, thereby enhancing the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in oncology.
The primary objective of EUCAIM is to create a federated platform that integrates anonymized cancer images and associated clinical data from diverse sources across Europe. This infrastructure will support the development, benchmarking, and validation of AI models for precision medicine, ultimately leading to improved diagnostic accuracy and personalized treatment strategies for cancer patients.
In Sweden, the initiative is coordinated by Umeå University, with significant contributions from Region Västerbotten, Uppsala University (SciLifeLab), Linköping University, and Karolinska Institutet. These institutions are instrumental in providing access to high-quality imaging data and clinical expertise, ensuring that the platform is both clinically relevant and scientifically robust. Vinnova, Sweden's innovation agency, is co-funding the Swedish participation, with a total investment of SEK 12.4 million allocated to the project.
