Initiative overview

The National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing (NAISS) in Sweden provides researchers with high-performance computing (HPC) resources, advanced storage solutions, and data services to support data-intensive scientific work. NAISS addresses the growing demand for computational power and storage capacity needed for modern research, including AI, climate modeling, bioinformatics, and physics simulations.

NAISS’s primary objectives are to deliver scalable and reliable HPC resources, facilitate secure and efficient data management, and enable collaborative research across Swedish universities and research institutions. The infrastructure supports both large-scale simulations and the processing of massive datasets, ensuring that researchers have the tools necessary to accelerate scientific discovery.

The organization operates a range of services, including computing clusters, storage systems such as Swestore, and support for data-intensive workflows. By integrating HPC resources with national research networks, NAISS allows seamless collaboration and access for researchers across disciplines and institutions.

NAISS plans to deploy a new supercomputer projected to be operational in 2025. This development will enable Sweden to become a full member of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, providing access to European HPC infrastructure and strengthening Sweden’s capacity for AI-driven research and high-performance scientific computing.
