This platform for developing and training language models will be established for Danish companies and authorities to freely access and use and further develop Danish language models for their own contexts. The initiative will be run under the auspices of the Danish Foundations Models – a collaboration between Aarhus University, the University of Southern Denmark, the University of Copenhagen and the Alexandra Institute on research-based development of language models.

Initiative overview

Denmark is setting up a national platform so companies, public authorities, and researchers can freely access and develop Danish-language AI models. Today, most advanced language technologies are built for English or controlled by large foreign firms, leaving smaller languages and local institutions at a disadvantage. This initiative addresses that gap by offering secure, research-based tools tailored to Danish needs.

As Initiative 3 of Denmark's national AI strategy, the project is led by Aarhus University, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Southern Denmark, and the Alexandra Institute under the “Danish Foundation Models” programme. It will run on UCloud, a secure computing environment already connected to European supercomputers.
